A Camelback Steam Excursion on the CNJ
A Farewell to Steam excursion was held by the Jersey Chapter of the NRHS on July 11, 1954. The run, from Bay Head to Jersey City, covered the NY&LB, the Freehold Branch, and the Bayshore Branch (Matawan to Atlantic Highlands). CNJ Camelback #774, the last of its type, had the honors of running the train. It was extremely popular, we found a movie clip on the web. A link to the video is found on the links page. You will be able to make out the movie cameraman in the picture at Jersey City of the engine backing into the terminal. When you see the video, you will be impressed with the clip at which these little engines could haul a train down the mainline. John has been a member of the North Jersey Chapter of the NRHS since those days. The cost of the adult fare: $4.50!
